Dressmaking (Sat, Spring Term 25)

Course information:

This course is suitable for all those interested in dressmaking, from complete beginners to the more experienced wanting to brush up on their skills.

Learners will be guided through the purchase of fabrics and patterns. You will learn how to make basic pattern alterations, cut out, assemble, and fit garments. You will also be taught basic dressmaking techniques and make samples to practice your skills.

There will be plenty of help with using a sewing machine if required. More advanced learners will be encouraged to make more complicated garments. There are some sewing machines available at the College.  All dressmaking classes include students with various levels of experience.

Aims and Objectives:

  • This course will help Learners to learn how to use a sewing machine
  • Learn how to use a domestic dressmaking pattern
  • Understand the importance of a well fitted garment
  • Learn how to assemble a garment in the correct order
  • Learn a variety of dressmaking skills, such as inserting zips, seam finishes, pockets and hems.

What you will need to bring

  • Pencils and pens.
  • Sewing machine (if over a year-old PAT test required)
  • Tape measure.
  • An old sheet or quilt cover for samples.

After your first lesson, you will need to purchase a pattern, fabric, and thread. Each student will need at least one metre of fabric to make their samples – an old sheet or quilt cover is ideal.

  • Learners can progress on to an accredited qualification or apprenticeship.

Sally Tilley

Sally has been dressmaking domestically and commercially for the past 20 years. She studied at Loughborough College of Art and worked briefly as a fashion designer before moving into teaching textiles. Since leaving the industry, Sally has continued to take on commission work and teach dressmaking and pattern cutting courses.
